West German Pottery – Price Trends – March to May 2014

Sale prices on eBay have been analysed to evaluate West German Pottery price trends. The aim is to monitor the changing value of Fat Lava pottery through analysis of UK eBay sales. The intention is that this will provide a barometer for the popularity/desirability of Fat Lava items.

It has been 5 months since we last published an update on price trends. Unfortunately in this period we have been lax in collecting the data and therefore unfortunately the time window in which the data is available has passed for two months of information. This update therefore provides values for March, April and May (a sample of sale prices and postage from 300 items). During March and April the average sale price (plus postage) and the top 20% most expensive items have both been high. The high calibre of items available on eBay during these two months certainly influenced the values.

West German Pottery Spotted (36) – House Beautiful – Magazine February 2012

House Beautiful is an interior design and decorating magazine. The February 2013 issue featured the Edinburgh apartment belonging to Helen and Ian who have decorated it in a mid century style. West German pottery can be seen in all the rooms featured with the exception of the small kitchen (though there is probably a West German Rumtopf or punch bowl hidden away in their cupboards!). The living room features some Tomado shelves which have a selection of ceramics including Italian Fat lava items (top left) and West German vases by Dumler and Breiden (right end of the top red shelf) and Bay (top right).

Another room also features a red Steuler vase in a décor known as Zyklon which was designed by Cari Zalloni.

West German vases have even made their way into their bathroom, where a little shelf holds three vases, the porcelain vase in the centre is manufactured by the German company KPM and the vase on the right is a Scheurich 271-22 designed by Heinz Siery.

French Holiday Fat Lava Pottery

We recently returned from a family holiday in France and unsurprisingly we explored a couple of second hand shops and stumbled upon this little French fat lava item by a pottery in Vallauris.

We also bought a couple of old ceramic bottles which have found a home between the plants in our garden.

Our final ceramic purchase was two mugs from a small studio pottery Mains d’argile (Hands of Clay) in the delightful little village of Tusson (Charente). Made by Marjolaine and André Sobieraj and selected after much deliberation between owls, elephants and antelopes.

West German Pottery Spotted (35) – Living Retro Book

The Living Retro book details the interiors of 18 varied locations visited by the author Andrew Weaving. One of the properties that he visits has two West German vases displayed on a wooden shelving unit.

Nestled on a busy side table in another house are a number of great ceramic animals including two fantastic Italian Bitossi birds – one in Blue and another in orange.
