West German Pottery, Ceramics and Fat Lava

Silberdistel

1947-Present
Founded in 1947 by Johann and Grete Breu in Gevelsberg. In 2005 the brand was sold and has been manufactured since in Rheinsberg near Berlin.

Silberdistel takes its name from a kind of silver thistle which grows in the Alps in Austria and Switzerland.

The factory remained a small studio pottery even during the rapid expansion of the ceramics industry in Germany during the 1950s and 1960s.

Identification
Light white clay was used. Items were never marked with W Germany or Germany and any markings usually comprise just the form number and size. On a small number of itmes and impressed Silberdistel stamp was added to the base.

Often items had (and still many are found today) with small green felt circles attached to the base.
